Crafted in Wakayama Prefecture using rare knitting machines from a century ago, this fabric is knit slowly and carefully to let the cotton breathe.

"The Ultimate Everyday Essential"

Our original loopwheel (Tsuri-ami) fabric is the result of an obsession that begins with the yarn itself.
The greatest characteristic of this fabric is the coexistence of two opposites: the signature softness created by knitting slowly with plenty of air, and a crisp, substantial texture (Hari-Koshi) achieved through high-density knitting.
Aiming for the "eternal standard," we’ve adopted a timeless silhouette that remains unaffected by passing trends. This is truly the ultimate piece for daily wear.
Featuring a minimalist small collar design, this piece is engineered for versatility.

By making the size regular, the characteristics of the hang-knit fabric can be felt to the maximum extent, achieving an eternal standard that is not affected by time.

The pockets are carefully adjusted for each size to achieve the perfect balance, no matter which size you choose.

The cloud-like softness and the way the fabric improves with every wear are hallmarks of the Tsuri-ami (Loopwheel) machine—a character that no modern machinery can replicate. We use uneven slub yarn made from U.S. cotton, intentionally retaining a degree of "fuzziness" (feathering) compared to standard yarns to preserve a crisp, dry touch. By knitting this specific yarn slowly to incorporate as much air as possible, we have achieved the perfect balance of incredible softness and a rugged, rustic texture.

"TSURIAMI"

The "hanging knitting machine" was developed about 100 years ago during the Taisho era. The machine is hung from a beam, and the knitted fabric accumulates under the machine under its own weight. Hanging knitting machines, which can only knit about 10 meters of fabric per day, have been eliminated over the years due to their inefficiency, and most of them have been abandoned, leaving only a few, and have switched to sinker knitting machines. In addition, since it is an old machine, it is difficult to maintain and difficult to obtain parts in case of breakdown, so it is a very rare knitting machine that will eventually disappear. However, the unique softness and firmness of the knitted fabric, which slowly incorporates air and minimizes stress on the fabric, are unique features of hanging knitting. BARNS OUTFITTERS has been selling it as a staple for many years.
